Chennai, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Nainar Nagendran, the president of the Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), raised concerns on Thursday regarding the name adopted by the ‘Tamilga Vetri Kazhagam’ (TVK)-led alliance, which calls itself the “Secular Social Justice Victory Alliance.”
During a press conference in Chennai, Nagendran accused C. Joseph Vijay’s party of promoting Tamil and Christianity. He emphasized that the alliance’s claims of social secularism are misleading.
“This is not social secularism,” he stated. “Tamil Nadu’s Finance Minister N. Mari Wilson and Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar only discuss Christianity and Tamil, which is not appropriate.”
Nagendran’s remarks were in response to a controversial statement made by Finance Minister Wilson, which sparked political uproar. Wilson had defended his budget speech in the state assembly, stating that the Tamil language could not teach him what Christianity has.
Earlier, the BJP had also accused Assembly Speaker Prabhakar of attempting to promote Christianity. This controversy began when Prabhakar participated as a chief guest at the anti-abortion rally, “5th National March for Life,” held in Chennai on August 8 and 9. BJP leader Narayanan Tirupati criticized Prabhakar, saying, “We have seen that JCD Prabhakar has always been a supporter of Christianity and is trying to promote it. While he has the right to his faith, he should not use his position to emphasize or promote his religion in a democracy.”
The TVK emerged as the largest party in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, winning 108 seats. However, it did not secure a majority to form the government alone, relying instead on support from several allies in the DMK-led coalition, including Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), and two communist parties.
In addition, Nainar Nagendran announced that the BJP will support AIADMK candidates in the upcoming by-elections for the Madurantakam and Dharapuram assembly seats.
