Chandigarh, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : On September 10, in Chandigarh, the convoy of Punjab Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Kailash Singh Dhillon was attacked by workers from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). Fortunately, Dhillon and other senior party leaders escaped unharmed.
The incident occurred while Dhillon was en route to the village of Tour Banjara in the Sangrur district. He was visiting to express condolences to the family of Gulzar Singh, who reportedly committed suicide after alleged harassment from the state government.
Accompanying Dhillon were BJP national vice president Manpreet Singh Badal, former state president Sunil Jakhar, and Ashwani Sharma. In a statement, Dhillon condemned the AAP, stating that their tenure has devolved into a reign of terror where no one feels safe.
Dhillon recounted that AAP workers blocked his vehicle and launched an attack. “This was not just an attack on me but on democracy itself,” he asserted. He emphasized that they were advocating for justice for Gulzar Singh’s family, but AAP workers encircled their vehicle, acting on orders from their leaders in Delhi.
He expressed further dismay that the police, stationed just 100 meters away, remained passive during the incident. According to Dhillon, the AAP government is attempting to suppress not only the voices of the public but also those of the opposition. He criticized the party for resorting to oppressive tactics.
The state BJP chief claimed that AAP has crossed all limits of repression and that its end is near. He noted that the proud people of Punjab are prepared to respond decisively to such tyranny.
On their return to Chandigarh, Dhillon and other BJP leaders faced another blockade by AAP workers. However, they exited their vehicles and proceeded on foot past the obstructed road to continue their journey.
Tensions between the BJP and AAP continue to escalate, raising questions about political safety in the region.
