New Delhi, September 10 (Daily Kiran) : Political leaders from various parties, including the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), are calling for strict action from the West Bengal government against individuals chanting slogans like “Kashmir Maange Azaadi” at Jadavpur University.
The demand follows a rally at the university campus protesting against anti-national slogans and graffiti. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had previously stated that forces disrespecting the nation and the saffron flag would be uprooted from the state.
BJP MP Praveen Khandelwal urged the Chief Minister to promptly identify those responsible and ensure they face severe penalties. Shyam Rajak, the national general secretary of JD(U), echoed this sentiment, asserting that such individuals do not deserve to reside in Bengal. He emphasized that universities should be sanctuaries of education, and any political misconduct there must be met with strict consequences.
Dilip Jaiswal, a BJP leader and Bihar minister, remarked that this is not a new issue. He noted that the university has long been home to individuals who engage in politics against Bengal and the nation. “Everyone knows that JNU and Jadavpur are breeding grounds for such activities,” he stated.
Congress MP Akhilesh Singh also weighed in, pointing out that since the BJP governs the state, it should take decisive action against these behaviors. “Who is stopping them from acting?” he questioned.
Kunal Ghosh, a Trinamool Congress MLA, acknowledged Jadavpur University’s high standing in merit but condemned the anti-national slogans. While he recognized that not everyone shares the same views, he stressed that advocating for Kashmir’s freedom is unacceptable. However, he cautioned against completely opposing campus politics.
Last month, Jadavpur University made headlines due to clashes between the student wings of CPI(M) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP). Following these altercations, both student groups organized protests, leading to heightened unrest on campus. In response, the BJP held a demonstration outside the university, which was addressed by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
Tensions continue to rise as political leaders demand accountability and action from the state government regarding the situation at Jadavpur University.
