Bengaluru, June 30: The Karnataka government has announced the launch of two significant campaigns, ‘Operation Rise’ and ‘Beda Bro’, aimed at making the state drug-free. Under the leadership of Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, the initiative focuses on strict action against narcotics and psychotropic drugs, alongside public awareness and rehabilitation efforts.
In a statement released on the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the government declared a ‘zero tolerance’ policy towards drug-related issues in the state. They described this initiative as a “war” against drugs, emphasizing that the campaigns will continue until the problem is completely eradicated.
According to the government, urban areas in Karnataka are most affected by drug abuse. Contributing factors include a large student population, working youth, nightlife, the presence of foreign nationals, and digital networks. Investigative agencies have uncovered cases involving synthetic drugs, courier supplies, and the involvement of foreign nationals.
The statement highlighted that the drug problem in Karnataka is escalating due to both demand and supply factors. Peer pressure, stress, recreational use, and experimentation among youth are driving the demand, while organized crime syndicates, interstate trafficking networks, international gangs, and digital platforms are fueling the supply.
To tackle this challenge, the government has strengthened the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF). The police will coordinate actions under ‘Operation Rise’, while the ‘Beda Bro’ campaign will focus on raising awareness among youth about the harmful effects of drugs.
The ‘Beda Bro’ campaign aims to communicate messages in a language and style relatable to young people, informing them about the physical, mental, social, and legal consequences of drug use. It will also encourage them to resist peer pressure, make informed decisions, and adopt a healthy lifestyle.
The initiative will emphasize connecting youth with sports, education, and skill development activities. Awareness programs, workshops, social media campaigns, and interactive sessions will be organized across the state.
On the occasion of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, the Karnataka police will also destroy 4,276.405 kilograms of seized narcotics valued at ₹97.90 crores, following court approval.
The government released statistics on drug enforcement actions. In 2025, police seized narcotics worth ₹216.93 crores, while from January 1 to May 31, 2026, drugs valued at ₹184.72 crores were confiscated.
In 2025, cases were filed against 9,064 individuals under the NDPS Act, with 6,651 actions taken so far in 2026. The police arrested 2,611 drug traffickers in 2025, and 1,406 traffickers in the first five months of 2026. Additionally, actions were taken against 6,455 individuals for drug use in 2025, and 5,090 in 2026. Furthermore, 41 drug manufacturers were arrested in 2025, with 17 apprehended in 2026.
The government stated that a comprehensive strategy involving law enforcement agencies, educational institutions, civil organizations, and community participation will enhance the fight against drug abuse. They reiterated their commitment to making the state drug-free through continuous efforts.
