Mumbai, July 24: Following a recent police baton charge on students in Delhi, a significant number of students have taken to the streets in Mumbai. Amid these protests, several videos have gone viral on social media, raising questions about the alleged actions of the Mumbai police. Some clips accuse officers of inappropriate behavior towards women and threatening students.
Sandeep Deshpande, a leader of the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has expressed strong criticism regarding the viral videos from the protests in Dadar. He described the scenes as deeply troubling, asserting that any form of misconduct by police towards women is unacceptable under any circumstances. While acknowledging the police’s responsibility to maintain law and order, he emphasized that this does not justify mistreatment.
Deshpande expressed confidence in the Maharashtra government, stating that Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Home Minister will take this matter seriously. He believes that Fadnavis, being a sensitive leader, will ensure accountability for any police personnel involved in such behavior. He stressed that incidents like these cannot be overlooked, whether in Dadar or any other part of Mumbai.
Additionally, Deshpande warned the police against allegedly threatening students with drug-related accusations in viral videos. He noted that today’s youth are more aware than ever of their rights and utilize technology to verify information instantly. For instance, when some students were asked by police to share their live location, they first consulted ChatGPT to understand the legal implications. They then informed the police that such a demand was not permissible.
Deshpande remarked that the current generation is informed and will not tolerate any form of arbitrary actions against them. He quipped, “This is the generation with iPhone 17 Pro Max, while the police are still stuck with Nokia.”
Regarding Sonam Wangchuk‘s recent end of his hunger strike, Deshpande stated, “It was essential for him to break his fast. A nation cannot watch a life being lost. Now the focus is on the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan, which is necessary.”
He further questioned the rationale behind the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar, suggesting that the public remains unaware of the reasons behind it. He criticized the double standards in politics, asking why a resignation that impacts the future of the nation and its children is not being demanded.
Deshpande reiterated the MNS’s ongoing protests demanding the resignation of the Education Minister, stating, “Our struggle will continue. It never ends. This government is stubborn in its arrogance, and we must fight against it.” He likened the government to a stone that requires persistent effort to break, asserting that students have initiated this struggle, and they will support them.
