Task Force Visits 30 Higher Education Institutions to Prevent Student Suicides

New Delhi, June 30: A special task force has visited 30 higher education institutions across the country to address the alarming rise in student suicides, including cases reported at IITs. This expert team has conducted numerous consultation sessions with students, faculty, and institutional representatives.

The Supreme Court established the National Task Force (NTF) on March 24, 2025, to tackle the increasing incidents of student suicides in higher education institutions and to study concerns related to mental health and well-being. The NTF is taking significant steps to address mental health issues and suicide prevention in higher education settings.

Since May 2025, the NTF has visited 30 institutions across 10 states to facilitate in-depth discussions tailored to regional and institutional contexts. Additionally, the task force has organized 25 consultation sessions with stakeholders, aiming to ensure an interdisciplinary and equity-focused approach.

From January 2026 onwards, the NTF has engaged in further consultations with various educational institutions on topics such as students and faculty with physical disabilities, caste discrimination in higher education, gender issues, mental health, and suicide prevention.

These consultations have included discussions on students from Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Classes, decriminalizing mental health and suicide, gender-related questions in student suicides, and collaborations with mental health NGOs.

According to a Supreme Court order dated May 27, 2026, the NTF has until October 31, 2026, to submit its final report. In compliance with a Supreme Court directive from February 6, 2026, former Chief Statistician of India, Prof. TCA Anant, has been appointed as the technical advisor to the NTF to conduct a comprehensive and scientific analysis of survey data.

The NTF’s primary responsibilities include identifying the main causes of student suicides, analyzing relevant laws, policies, and institutional frameworks, and proposing necessary reforms within the current legal and institutional structures. This is aimed at ensuring thorough investigations, accountability, and preventive measures. Recommendations will focus on addressing existing shortcomings, creating a more inclusive and supportive academic environment, and ensuring equal opportunities for marginalized community members. Relevant documents are available on the NTF’s official website.
