Belagavi, July 1: Karnataka’s Deputy Chief Minister G. Parameshwara announced on Wednesday that the state is facing a serious situation if rainfall does not occur in the coming days. The government has already prepared an action plan, which will be implemented by the respective deputy commissioners. Each district will receive ₹5 crore to ensure uninterrupted drinking water supply.

During a press conference in Belagavi, Parameshwara stated that the state government will assess the issues arising in the Belagavi region, particularly due to the low rainfall this year. Measures will be taken to address the impacts of water scarcity and crop loss.

He emphasized the need for precautionary discussions and necessary directives to ensure adequate drinking water supply. Responding to a question about declaring drought, Parameshwara mentioned that there are established criteria for declaring any taluka or district as drought-affected.

The decision will be based on factors such as rainfall deficiency, crop loss, and water availability. Currently, there has been no discussion about declaring a drought, and cloud seeding is not being considered at this time. Decisions will be made based on the evolving situation.

Parameshwara expressed disappointment over the central government’s lack of cooperation, stating that they do not wish to politicize the issue. However, the central government has not released even 10% of the relief requested in their report.

He noted that a drought-like situation is developing in Belagavi district, increasing the likelihood of water scarcity. June recorded below-average rainfall, resulting in a decline in groundwater levels.

Referring to the revenue department, he mentioned that initiatives such as the distribution of ownership deeds and the declaration of revenue villages have been successfully ongoing for the past three years. The government has now decided to expedite these processes and complete them within the set timelines.

Regarding the religious endowment department, he stated that encroachments have been found on properties of category A, B, and C temples. District officials have been instructed to survey and remove these encroachments.

He added that officials have been directed to ensure that devotees face no inconvenience while visiting temples, receiving offerings, or obtaining accommodations. Funds received by temples should only be utilized after obtaining approval from the competent authority. Unnecessary expenditures will not be permitted under any circumstances, and strict actions will be taken with established standard operating procedures and regulations.

On the topic of sports, the Deputy Chief Minister stated that the government will prioritize this sector. Additional support will be provided to district-level schools and colleges lacking sports facilities to promote sports activities.
