Judicial Officials from Jharkhand and Odisha to Join Ongoing Process in West Bengal

Kolkata, March 6: Two hundred judicial officials from Jharkhand and Odisha are set to arrive in West Bengal by Saturday. They will participate in the ongoing judicial process concerning voter documentation identified under the “logical discrepancies” category by the Election Commission of India (ECI), starting March 9.

Sources from the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) of West Bengal indicated that these officials will undergo a two-day training program on the judicial decision-making process over the weekend. Following this, they will join the existing team of judicial officers already engaged in the ongoing process starting Monday.

A source from the CEO’s office stated, “The inclusion of 200 judicial officials from Jharkhand and Odisha will raise the total number of officials involved in the judicial process to 732.”

Most of these officials will be stationed in Kolkata, while others will be deployed in major cities such as Bardhaman in East Midnapore, Asansol in West Bardhaman, Kharagpur in West Midnapore, and Siliguri in Darjeeling.

Their accommodation has been arranged primarily near Kolkata Airport and significant railway stations in the city and surrounding districts.

Next week, particularly on Monday and Tuesday, two other significant events related to the Special Intensive Review (SIR) and preparations for the upcoming assembly elections will take place.

The full bench of the Election Commission, chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, will arrive in Kolkata on the night of March 8. They will review the ongoing judicial process and preparations for the assembly elections over the next two days.

A crucial hearing regarding the SIR and related judicial decisions is scheduled for March 10 in the Supreme Court.

The final voter list, excluding cases sent for judicial determination, was published on February 28. According to a previous Supreme Court order, a supplementary list will be published in due time.

According to data from the CEO’s office, over 6 million cases have been sent for judicial determination, with nearly 500,000 cases processed by Thursday night.
