Kolkata, June 18: West Bengal Governor R.N. Ravi praised Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s efforts during the budget session on Thursday. He noted that the new government is making commendable strides to curb infiltration. The Governor also commended the current police administration for its long-standing actions against corruption and extortion.
The budget session of the West Bengal Assembly commenced with the Governor’s address. In his speech, he highlighted that infiltration along the international border has led to demographic changes in certain areas.
He stated, “The new state government has initiated strict actions against anti-social elements that were previously protected by the last administration. Additionally, robust measures are being taken to identify and repatriate infiltrators. The work to erect fencing along the international border, where it was previously absent, has begun. The new government is committed to ensuring border security and preventing infiltration at all costs.”
The Governor criticized the previous Trinamool Congress government for its alleged delays in implementing significant projects like the Kolkata Metro Railway. He remarked, “The expansion of the Kolkata Metro had been stalled for a long time, but the new government has now resumed this work.”
The budget session in West Bengal will run from June 18 to June 25. Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta is set to present the full state budget for the fiscal year 2026-27 in the assembly on June 22.
On February 5, the then Finance State Minister (Independent Charge) Chandrima Bhattacharya presented an interim budget (Vote on Account) in the assembly. Due to the assembly elections in April, a full budget could not be presented. The election results were announced on May 4, leading to the formation of the new government.
After taking charge of the finance department last week, Swapan Dasgupta stated that his goal is to increase the state’s tax revenue without imposing additional tax burdens on the public.
