Jammu and Kashmir Prepares for Muharram: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah Reviews Arrangements

Srinagar, June 15: Chief Minister Omar Abdullah chaired a high-level meeting on Monday to review the preparations for Muharram in Jammu and Kashmir. During the meeting, he engaged with senior administrative and police officials to ensure a peaceful and organized observance of the occasion.

Abdullah directed all relevant departments to complete necessary arrangements for the smooth conduct of Muharram. The meeting included the Deputy Chief Minister, cabinet ministers, local legislators, senior officials, and representatives from various Shia organizations, who shared their suggestions and insights regarding the arrangements.

Emphasizing the safety and convenience of devotees, Abdullah instructed the concerned departments to ensure uninterrupted electricity and water supply, health services, sanitation, traffic control, and other essential public services.

He stressed the importance of completing all preparations in advance to prevent any inconvenience for those participating in religious gatherings and processions, allowing them to observe Muharram in traditional ways.

Officials from various departments provided updates on their preparations and ongoing efforts. Representatives from Shia organizations raised specific issues needing attention and offered suggestions for improving arrangements.

Furthermore, Abdullah instructed officials to maintain coordination and ensure prompt resolution of public complaints and service-related issues.

During Muharram, large religious gatherings and processions take place across Jammu and Kashmir, particularly in Shia-majority areas. The administration makes extensive preparations each year to facilitate a peaceful and organized observance of the event.

The meeting reviewed preparations across various sectors, reaffirming the government’s commitment to providing all necessary facilities for devotees.

Muharram marks the first month of the Islamic calendar and the beginning of the Islamic New Year. This month is considered highly sacred for the Muslim community, featuring two significant religious occasions: Ashura (the 10th day of Muharram) and the commencement of Hijrat. This year, Muharram begins on June 16, marking the start of the Islamic year 1448 Hijri, with Ashura being observed on June 25.

Around the world, Shia Muslims participate in large mourning processions during Muharram, commemorating the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Muhammad. Imam Hussein was martyred by the forces of the second Umayyad caliph, Yazid, in Karbala, Iraq.
