Canberra, June 27: Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has emphasized the importance of building strong relations with India for his country’s long-term economic and strategic future. According to a report, he stated that strengthening ties with India is a top priority for Australia.
Speaking at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia (CEDA) State of the Nation Conference, Albanese highlighted the need for Australia to increase investments in Southeast Asia and elevate its relationship with India.
This statement comes at a time when Australia and India are continuously enhancing cooperation in trade, investment, education, defense, and people-to-people connections. Both nations are working to strengthen their partnership in the Indo-Pacific region.
As reported by ‘The Australia Today,’ Albanese noted that Australia’s multicultural workforce, its global connections, and regional partnerships are among its greatest strengths.
He mentioned that by investing in innovation, the manufacturing sector, energy security, and international partnerships, Australia can emerge from global uncertainties as a stronger, fairer, and better-prepared nation.
Albanese described the Indo-Pacific as the fastest-growing region in the world and stressed the importance of Australia playing a robust role within it. He underscored the significance of partnerships with neighboring countries.
The report indicated that in recent years, the relationship between Australia and India has strengthened through the Australian-India Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, increased trade cooperation, and collaboration in critical minerals, technology, education, and security.
During a speech in the Australian Parliament last month, Albanese also referenced India’s economic progress, noting that trade relations between the two countries have improved due to the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA).
Recalling his first visit to India in 1991, he described it as a “very good experience.” He stated, “India has the largest population in the world, and in this decade, it will become the third-largest economy. This presents a significant opportunity for our region. We are a Pacific nation, but we are also part of the Indian Ocean region. Economic cooperation and trade agreements have strengthened our business ties. Shared elements like culture, education, and cricket have brought us closer. My two visits to India since becoming Prime Minister have been very special for me.”
