Moscow, June 27: Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has called for clarity regarding the United States’ role in resolving the Ukraine conflict. His remarks followed a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio concerning the Anchorage summit.
Lavrov emphasized the need for a clear understanding of the situation. He stated, “It is important to clarify the entire situation. However, one thing is certain: the proposals put forth by the U.S. in Alaska were accepted by Russia.”
On Thursday, Marco Rubio asserted that no final agreement was reached between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump regarding Ukraine during their meeting in Anchorage.
Speaking to reporters during a visit to Bahrain, Rubio said, “There was no agreement in Alaska. Only a proposal was presented. If an agreement had been reached, the war would have ended by now.”
Rubio’s comments came after Lavrov noted that the U.S. had yet to respond to the proposals made to resolve the Ukraine dispute during the Alaska talks.
According to a report by Russian news agency TASS, Lavrov stated at the ‘Primakov Readings’ international scientific and expert conference that the U.S. had presented “very clear proposals” before the Russia-U.S. summit, which President Putin had accepted.
Lavrov remarked, “We believed that an agreement had been reached. But then a week passed, then two weeks. President Trump returned to Washington and consulted with European countries. Somehow, there was also a conversation with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Yet, to this day, we have not received any response from the U.S. regarding the proposal we supported. This is the current situation.”
The Russian Foreign Minister also mentioned that the agreement reached in Alaska was already a compromise.
Lavrov questioned Rubio’s assertion that only proposals were made in Alaska, stating, “When my colleague Marco Rubio says that there were only proposals and no agreement, I wonder what we are calling an ‘agreement’? If one side, namely the U.S., presents proposals for a solution and the other side, Russia, accepts those proposals, then saying that no agreement was reached does not seem accurate.”
