Tokyo, June 26: Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), announced on Friday that the agency has begun preliminary discussions with Iranian officials regarding nuclear inspections.
According to a report by Kyodo News, Grossi stated during a press conference in Tokyo that technical-level talks have taken place with the Iranian side. He revealed that these discussions occurred over the past weekend in Bürgenstock, Switzerland.
As reported by Xinhua News Agency, Grossi had indicated earlier this week that in light of the recent peace agreement memorandum (MoU) between the United States and Iran, the IAEA would conduct inspections in Iran.
However, a senior Iranian diplomat stated on Wednesday that there are no plans to allow IAEA access to the nuclear facilities that have been targeted by the US and Israel. The diplomat emphasized that such matters would only be resolved under a final agreement with Washington, and that the other party must take concrete steps to lift all sanctions.
US Vice President J.D. Vance mentioned on Monday that Iran has agreed to allow IAEA inspectors to return to the country. He described this as a significant success in the negotiations aimed at permanently ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program and reducing tensions in the Middle East.
Vance told reporters, “The Iranians have agreed to call back IAEA inspectors to their country. This is a major achievement for the American people and a first step towards permanently ending Iran’s nuclear weapons program.”
He also noted that discussions between Iran and the IAEA could commence soon, stating, “I expect this to happen within this week. We believe that some talks with inspectors and the IAEA could start as early as today.”
