International Tai Chi Day Celebrated in Chennai

Chennai, March 25: The Chinese Embassy in India organized the International Tai Chi Day celebration and competition in Chennai on March 21-22, in collaboration with the Indian Wushu Association. Wang Xinming, Minister-Counselor of the Chinese Embassy, attended the inaugural ceremony and shared his thoughts. Representatives from various Indian organizations, including the Tamil Nadu Sports Development Authority and the Tamil Nadu Olympic Association, were also present.

In his address, Wang praised the Indian Wushu Association for its long-term efforts to promote Chinese Wushu in India. He emphasized that Tai Chi is a vital part of China’s rich traditional culture, embodying philosophies of harmony between humanity and nature, as well as balance between strength and gentleness. It offers both health benefits and rich cultural values.

Wang noted that in recent years, the number of Indian participants in Tai Chi activities has increased, serving as an important medium for enhancing mutual understanding between Chinese and Indian people. He highlighted that UNESCO designated March 21 as ‘International Tai Chi Day’ last year, reflecting the international community’s recognition of Tai Chi’s significance and providing a crucial platform for cultural exchange and mutual learning.

Over 200 Wushu practitioners from across India gathered at Kovalam Blue Flag Beach to participate in various competitions, including Tai Chi, Tai Chi Sword, Tai Chi Fan, and partner exercises. Against the backdrop of the sea and sky’s natural beauty, the participants’ graceful and captivating performances created a harmonious and enchanting scene. The innovative ‘Beach + Tai Chi’ format expanded the traditional venues and presentation styles of Wushu, significantly increasing its popularity and participation. The event received enthusiastic responses from the local community, especially the youth.
