
New Delhi, April 2: The Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has introduced a new CBSE curriculum focused on computational thinking and artificial intelligence for students in grades 3 to 8.
This initiative, titled “AI for Education, AI in Education,” will be implemented starting the 2026-27 academic session. It is seen as a significant shift in the school education system. The launch took place during a key event in New Delhi, attended by Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary, senior officials from the Ministry of Education, NCERT, and CBSE.
During the event, Minister Pradhan stated that the introduction of this new curriculum marks a transformative step towards future-oriented education. He explained that for the first time, artificial intelligence will be systematically integrated into schools on a large scale. The curriculum includes well-structured modules, comprehensive handbooks for teachers, and a robust framework for student assessment. This will help children develop an understanding of new technologies from an early age.
He emphasized that this initiative aligns with the vision of “AI for Education, AI in Education,” bringing new energy to education. It aims to foster logical thinking, innovative perspectives, and a culture of innovation among children. Given India’s technological advancements, this curriculum will empower students to understand and actively participate in a digital future. He praised the Central Board of Secondary Education and the National Council of Educational Research and Training for developing this visionary framework, making the education system more flexible and technology-enabled.
Jayant Chaudhary added that education today must prepare students not just for current needs but for a constantly evolving future that is difficult to predict. He noted that artificial intelligence is changing how knowledge is created, decisions are made, and economies function. It is crucial that children become responsible creators and leaders of technology, rather than mere consumers. This curriculum has been developed under the Ministry of Education’s Department of School Education and Literacy, aiming to prepare students for learning AI. It will develop skills such as logical thinking, problem-solving, and pattern recognition through computational thinking.
Additionally, students will learn about the significance and application of artificial intelligence in daily life. This curriculum will also promote digital literacy, responsible use of technology, innovation, critical thinking, and ethical decision-making. Integrating computational thinking and AI into education is considered essential for preparing students as future digital citizens. Computational thinking is viewed as the foundation of AI, providing the intellectual framework to understand and develop AI-based solutions.
Through this approach, children will develop skills in logical reasoning, systematic problem-solving, and pattern recognition. Early education in this manner will teach students to use data correctly and prepare them to use technology ethically. The curriculum also promotes holistic development by establishing connections between various subjects like mathematics, science, and humanities. It helps students understand that knowledge is not fragmented. This initiative aligns with the goals of the National Education Policy 2020, which aims to position India as a global leader in fields like artificial intelligence and machine learning. Furthermore, it is designed according to the National Curriculum Framework 2023, which clearly outlines learning objectives, competencies, and outcomes. The curriculum will gradually establish a strong foundation in computational thinking before expanding AI studies in higher grades.
