Jaipur, April 2: A political controversy has emerged in Rajasthan following a comment made during a discussion on Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) in the Lok Sabha. Rajkumar Raut, a Member of Parliament from the Bharat Adivasi Party (BAP), has demanded an apology, stating that the remark was an insult to the tribal community.
Raut, representing the Banswara-Dungarpur constituency, responded to the comment on Wednesday, asserting that it disrespected the entire tribal community. The controversy began during a discussion under Rule 193, where the Union Home Minister accused Raut of engaging in “vote-bank politics.”
In a sharp response, Raut took to social media, launching a campaign with the hashtag “Home Minister Amit Shah should apologize.” He expressed concern over labeling a tribal MP, who raises issues regarding alleged killings under anti-Naxal operations, as a “Naxalite.”
He stated, “If a tribal MP speaks out against the murder of innocent people and is called a ‘Naxalite’ in Parliament, imagine the conditions faced by ordinary tribal citizens. This issue is not just personal insult; it relates to the dignity of the entire tribal community.”
Referring to Parliament as the “largest Panchayat” in the country, Raut cited the Constitution drafted by Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and questioned whether raising concerns related to one’s community in Parliament could be considered a crime.
He accused the central government of attempting to silence tribal voices and argued that such comments are contrary to the spirit of democracy and constitutional values.
Previously, on March 30, Home Minister Amit Shah criticized statements claiming that there has been no development in tribal communities. Targeting Raut again, he emphasized that the Constitution provides a legitimate path to fight injustice, noting that leaders like Raut have reached their current positions through this democratic framework.
He further stated that if such individuals resorted to violence, they might be among those surrendering to authorities today. Emphasizing his point, he asserted that no issue can be resolved through weapons, and dialogue and debate are the only effective means to find solutions.
The Home Minister reiterated that a lack of development cannot justify extremism. He mentioned that many regions in the country have lagged in development for decades, yet Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) has not thrived there. He reaffirmed that India is a democracy governed by the Constitution, which provides solutions to all grievances.
Shah concluded by stating that despite the existence of injustice and unequal development, the government is fully committed to delivering justice to all and will not bow to any threats.
