New Delhi, April 1: Beijing reports that New York City’s Mayor Zohra Mamdani made a significant announcement on Tuesday, allowing the use of TikTok on government electronic devices once again. Mamdani shared this decision on TikTok, stating in a brief post, “TikTok, we’re back.”
According to a report by the Associated Press (AP), an official memorandum from the New York Mayor’s office clarified that this policy change aims to enhance the city government’s communication capabilities. The memo indicated that this move would open new avenues for dialogue with New Yorkers and enable the swift and effective dissemination of essential information.
However, strict security measures accompany this decision. The Mayor’s office has mandated that all government departments adhere to established security protocols when operating their official TikTok accounts. Only designated devices, which do not store sensitive data, will be permitted for use. Additionally, clear appointments will be made for personnel responsible for account management.
It is noteworthy that since late 2022, the federal government and several states in the U.S. had imposed bans on TikTok usage on government devices, citing ‘data security’ concerns. In line with this, former Mayor Eric Adams had also prohibited the use of the app on New York City government devices in 2023.
