India Approves Export of Essential Goods to Maldives for 2026-27, Sends 1,000 Metric Tons of Rice to Burkina Faso

New Delhi, April 2: In a significant move, India has approved the export of essential goods to the Maldives for the fiscal year 2026-27, following a request from the Maldivian government. According to the Indian High Commission, this initiative will ensure the supply of various necessary food and construction materials under a special bilateral mechanism, thereby strengthening the Maldives’ needs and development projects.

The Indian High Commission reported that the Indian government has permitted the export of specific quantities of essential items, including eggs, potatoes, onions, rice, wheat flour, sugar, lentils, stone aggregates, and river sand, as per the Maldivian government’s request.

Under this mechanism, the quota for each item has been determined based on the requirements shared by the Maldivian authorities. The supply of river sand and stone aggregates is particularly crucial for the Maldives’ construction industry. Additionally, there has been a remarkable 77% increase in the rice quota for the current year.

As in previous years, the export of these goods during the fiscal year 2026-27 will remain free from any existing or future restrictions or prohibitions. India is firmly committed to supporting human-centered development in the Maldives as part of its ‘Neighborhood First’ policy.

Furthermore, India has sent a shipment of 1,000 metric tons of rice to Burkina Faso as humanitarian assistance. This initiative reflects India’s commitment to the countries of the Global South.

Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on the social media platform ‘X’, “India has dispatched a shipment of 1,000 metric tons of rice to Burkina Faso as humanitarian assistance. The aim is to support food security for vulnerable communities and internally displaced persons. This step demonstrates India’s ongoing commitment as a reliable partner for development, humanitarian assistance, and disaster relief for Global South countries.”
