New York, March 3: In Texas, a person wearing symbols associated with Iran opened fire, resulting in the death of an Indian-origin student, Savita Shan, along with another student. The incident occurred early Sunday morning in Austin, leaving 14 others injured.
Authorities identified the shooter as 53-year-old Nadiaga Diagne, an immigrant from Senegal, who was wearing a T-shirt featuring the Iranian flag and another shirt with the phrase “Property of Allah.”
Alex Doran, the acting special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), indicated that Diagne may have links to terrorism, and investigations are ongoing.
In response to the bombing of Iran by the United States and Israel on Saturday, law enforcement agencies across the U.S. have been placed on high alert due to fears of terrorism. FBI Director Kash Patel announced on social media platform X that he instructed anti-terrorism and intelligence teams to remain vigilant.
Jim Davis, president of the University of Texas, confirmed Shan’s death in an email to students, describing her as someone “preparing to change the world.” He remembered her as a “daughter of loving parents” and “a loyal friend to many,” expressing collective sorrow over the tragic news.
According to the university’s radio station, Shan was 21 years old and grew up in Austin. On LinkedIn, she mentioned pursuing a dual degree in Economics and Management Information Systems at the University of Texas, expecting to graduate this year.
Shan was also a volunteer with the Austin Tamil Sangam and had launched an e-commerce business selling stickers called Sunflake Stickers. She had interned at PricewaterhouseCoopers and major retailer Staples.
Describing the shooting, Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis stated that Diagne parked his car outside a beer garden and opened fire on patrons with a pistol. He then exited his vehicle and began shooting at pedestrians with a rifle, prompting police to fatally shoot him.
