In a historic step towards technological self-reliance and digital sovereignty, the Government of India today announced the ‘One Nation, One Time’ initiative. At a high-level meeting attended by key stakeholders, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare confirmed that India will soon operate on its own ultra-precise national time system — ending reliance on foreign satellites for time data.

What Is ‘One Nation, One Time’?
Until now, India has been dependent on US and other foreign satellite systems (like GPS) to access precise time data for sectors such as banking, telecom, power, transportation, and digital services.
Under the new plan, India will generate and synchronize its own national time, using:
✅ NavIC — India’s indigenous navigation satellite system (comparable to GPS, but optimized for Indian needs)
✅ NPL — National Physical Laboratory, which maintains India’s official time standards
This move will enhance India’s technological autonomy and eliminate any dependence on foreign-controlled time sources.
How Will India’s Time Be Measured?
India has already installed atomic clocks in five key locations across the country. These clocks offer time measurement with:
Accuracy up to nanoseconds
Time calculation variance of less than 0.1 milliseconds — practically imperceptible for human users
Such ultra-precise time synchronization will improve data integrity and reliability in critical sectors.
What Did Nidhi Khare Say?
Speaking after the meeting, Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare emphasized the importance of this national milestone:
“This is a big step towards India’s digital sovereignty. Now, we will no longer need to rely on foreign systems. Our country’s own time zone, atomic clock, and satellites will define time for India.”
The move also reinforces India’s position as a rising global tech power.
When Will ‘One Nation, One Time’ Be Implemented?
The project is currently in its final stages of readiness. A formal notification is expected soon, with likely phased implementation across sectors beginning in the first quarter of FY 2026.
This means Indian citizens and industries can expect to experience the benefits of ‘One Nation, One Time’ within the next few months.
Final Word
India’s adoption of its own national time standard is more than just a technical upgrade — it is a clear signal of the country’s progress towards technological independence and digital self-reliance.
By powering sectors like banking, telecom, defense, space, power grids, and digital infrastructure with a sovereign time source, India is paving the way for a new era of precision, reliability, and national control in the digital age.
