Beijing, April 28: The 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons commenced on April 27 at the United Nations headquarters in New York. The conference featured a general debate.
During this event, the Chinese representative refuted claims made by certain countries regarding a so-called “nuclear threat from China.” He emphasized that China has consistently adhered to a nuclear strategy focused on self-defense. The accusations are entirely baseless and malicious.
Xiu Feng, a counselor from the Chinese Permanent Mission to the UN’s Disarmament Department, stated that China maintains its nuclear forces at the minimum level required for national security. China adopts a highly restrained approach to the scale and development of its nuclear weapons and does not compare its capabilities with those of other nuclear-armed states. He affirmed that China will not engage in a nuclear arms race with any country, now or in the future. Some nations have deliberately ignored this fact and maliciously propagated the so-called “nuclear threat from China.” Such allegations are completely unfounded and ill-intentioned.
Additionally, China criticized these countries for their double standards regarding issues like nuclear sharing, nuclear umbrellas, and extended deterrence. Such practices could undermine the international nuclear disarmament process and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
