Motihari, February 19: Police in Bihar’s East Champaran district have arrested the main accused in a case involving fraud exceeding one crore rupees through a mobile application. The suspect, identified as Sangam Kumar, was apprehended in Faridabad, Haryana.

Authorities revealed that Kumar is the mastermind behind the fraudulent “Agni App.” He hails from Pali village in Faridabad.

Abhinav Parasar, the Deputy Superintendent of Police for Cyber Crime in Motihari, stated on Wednesday that efforts are underway to identify and arrest other members of the gang.

The investigation began last year when Abhishek Sharma, a resident of the Raxaul area, filed a complaint at the cyber police station. He alleged that the Agni App lured young people with promises of high returns on mobile recharges, electricity bill payments, and advertisements. Additionally, users were enticed with attractive gifts, including cars, for investing larger sums.

Kumar falsely claimed to be the CEO of the Agni App. The gang organized seminars in various locations to attract young individuals. Initially, small profits were shown in the app’s wallet to build trust. However, once a significant number of people invested large amounts, the app was abruptly shut down, and the accused fled.

Authorities suspect that dozens of victims may have lost crores of rupees. During the investigation, police received information indicating that Sangam Kumar was hiding in Haryana. Subsequently, a special raid team, led by DSP Abhinav Parasar, was formed and successfully captured the main suspect.

DSP Parasar mentioned that they are interrogating Kumar to gather information about other gang members, bank accounts, and digital transactions. The police are also trying to determine the extent of the fraud network and which other states it may have affected.
