Mumbai, June 12: A controversy has arisen following the removal of Koli community boats from Girgaon Chowpatty. Maharashtra’s cabinet minister and local MLA, Mangal Prabhat Lodha, has taken immediate notice of the situation. He has instructed relevant officials to address the matter with sensitivity.
Representatives from the Koli community met with Minister Lodha to express their concerns and issues. They reported that the removal of the boats is affecting their livelihoods and impacting their traditional rights. After listening to their grievances, Lodha promptly discussed the matter over the phone with the Deputy Commissioner of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation and the Fisheries Department Commissioner.
The minister directed officials to maintain dialogue and coordination with the Koli community. He emphasized that any administrative action must consider the community’s livelihoods, traditions, and rights. Lodha stated that Girgaon Chowpatty is not just a tourist spot but a vital part of Mumbai’s cultural and historical identity, where the Koli community has long been engaged in their traditional occupation.
Lodha remarked that the issue concerning the Koli community at Girgaon Chowpatty is highly sensitive and should be resolved through dialogue and mutual understanding. He clarified that until a suitable location or satisfactory alternative arrangements are provided for the Koli community, he will stand firmly with them.
” Mumbai belongs first and foremost to the Koli community. We will make every effort to find a positive solution while respecting their livelihoods and traditional rights,” he said.
He expressed confidence that a satisfactory resolution would soon emerge through dialogue and cooperation among all parties involved.
