Kolkata, July 18: Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Sougata Roy expressed concern over the hospitalization of activist Sonam Wangchuk after his hunger strike. He praised Wangchuk for his courageous struggle regarding critical issues.
In an interview with a news agency, Roy remarked that if the action taken was based on a High Court order, commenting on it would be challenging. However, he supported Wangchuk’s demand for the resignation of the education minister, stating that the central government is intimidated by Wangchuk’s movement.
Regarding the preparations for the Martyrs’ Day event scheduled for July 21 in Kolkata, Roy mentioned that the party is fully prepared and expects a large turnout from across the state. Continuous meetings are being held to review the arrangements, ensuring that party workers are actively engaged and that all logistics are running smoothly.
On the proposed ‘Vande Mataram Bill,’ Roy expressed his support, emphasizing that Vande Mataram is the national song and its dignity must be preserved. He suggested that, similar to the laws governing the national anthem, a law should also be enacted for the national song.
Roy also responded to the ‘Prevention of Insult to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2026,’ introduced by the central government. He stressed the importance of protecting the reputation and respect associated with Vande Mataram, indicating that the party holds a positive stance on this issue.
Commenting on Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s visit to West Bengal, Roy stated that he is not fully aware of the purpose of the visit. However, he criticized the BJP for alleged lawlessness, claiming that BJP workers are engaging in hooliganism in various areas.
Meanwhile, TMC MP Sagarika Ghosh launched an attack on the central government regarding Wangchuk’s case. She accused the government of being frightened by the movement, which she described as peaceful. Ghosh stated that she intended to participate in the parliamentary march alongside Wangchuk.
She characterized the government’s actions as an assault on democracy and the rights of the people. Ghosh assured that TMC will continue to raise public issues in Parliament. Referring to the NEET exam and alleged matters related to the Ram Temple, she insisted that the central government should not evade accountability. She emphasized that the country should be governed not just with strictness, but by listening to the voices of the people.
