New Directions for Basmati Rice Research as SKUAST Jammu Vice-Chancellor Visits Chakroi Center

Jammu, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Vice-Chancellor of Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology (SKUAST) Jammu, Professor B.N. Tripathi, recently visited the Basmati Rice Research Center in Chakroi. His visit focused on assessing the state-of-the-art research facilities designed to bolster Basmati rice research and promote quality production in the Jammu region.

During the visit, Professor Tripathi thoroughly inspected various research facilities at the center and engaged in discussions with scientists and technical staff. He was briefed on the modern research equipment and laboratories available at the center. Ongoing research programs aimed at developing advanced varieties of Basmati rice, preserving germplasm, improving quality, and enhancing the competitiveness of Basmati in the global market were also highlighted.

The Vice-Chancellor examined the research fields and experimental plots, reviewing the progress of the Basmati seed production program and various field trials. He expressed particular interest in the new Basmati varieties developed by the university.

Professor Tripathi emphasized the significance of Basmati rice as a vital and premium agricultural product for the country. He underscored the need to preserve the heritage, identity, and genetic diversity of traditional Basmati germplasm while advocating for its continuous improvement through scientific methods.

He remarked that the objective of research activities should be to enhance farmers’ incomes and strengthen their livelihoods. Additionally, maintaining the unique identity and quality of Jammu’s Basmati rice is crucial.

The Vice-Chancellor encouraged scientists to promote multidisciplinary research based on farmers’ needs, thereby strengthening the center’s scientific capabilities. He expressed satisfaction with the center’s development and ongoing research activities, noting that the Basmati Rice Research Center in Chakroi has the potential to emerge as a center of excellence in Basmati rice research, conservation, and the development of advanced varieties.

Dr. S.K. Gupta, Director of Research, and Dr. R.K. Salgotra, Director of the Institute of Biotechnology and Director of Education at SKUAST Jammu, were also present during the visit.
