Washington, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The United States has approved an additional $1 million to assist Nepal in identifying victims of recent floods. This funding increases the total aid provided by the U.S. State Department to over $5 million for disaster relief efforts. American forensic experts are collaborating with Nepalese police to aid in the identification process.
In a statement released on September 12, the State Department noted that the new funding will enhance forensic support for Nepal’s police. The Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs is overseeing this financial assistance, aimed at helping the Nepalese government identify victims.
U.S. officials are working closely with Nepalese authorities to assess urgent needs, which include DNA analysis kits. This forensic aid is in addition to emergency food, shelter, healthcare, and other relief efforts for affected communities.
Expressing sympathy for those impacted, the State Department reaffirmed America’s friendship with the people of Nepal, stating, “The safety of Americans in the affected area is our top priority.”
The largest portion of the aid, totaling $3 million, is being allocated through a global assistance agreement with the World Food Program for food and logistics. Additionally, $365,000 will support health, nutrition, water, sanitation, and hygiene initiatives through organizations like Jhpiego, FHI 360, and UNICEF. With the newly approved forensic funding, the total amount allocated by the State Department reaches $5.05 million.
Separately, the U.S. military has provided 5,000 special supplies, including 500 first-aid kits, stretchers, and front-end loaders to assist disaster victims. According to the State Department, this equipment is aiding search, rescue, and relief operations led by Nepal.
A four-member U.S. Army Civil Affairs Team is also on the ground, working on humanitarian projects to address needs following the disaster. Additionally, FBI forensic specialists are collaborating with Nepalese police to help identify victims, aiming to assist authorities in recognizing the deceased and answering questions from families of American citizens and other victims.
The State Department described the operation as one that is adapting to rapidly changing circumstances, emphasizing their commitment to work with local partners to meet Nepal’s needs. “As the Secretary has repeatedly stated, the U.S. is prepared to work with the Nepalese government to provide additional assistance directly addressing their needs,” the department added.
