Chennai, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : The Tamil Nadu government is taking urgent measures to address the escalating demand for electricity, driven by prolonged heat and decreased wind energy production. On September 13, officials announced plans to acquire an additional 2,000 megawatts (MW) of power from electricity-generating companies and the open market.
The Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) initiated this emergency procurement in response to significant increases in electricity consumption and reports of supply disruptions across various districts. The corporation aims to narrow the gap between demand and supply, ensuring a stable electricity supply for residents.
This decision follows complaints of unexpected power outages lasting up to an hour in some areas. Citizens have protested, accusing the government of failing to provide timely information about power cuts and demanding immediate action to restore reliable electricity service.
Electricity Minister R. Nirmalkumar attributed the shortages to a sudden drop in wind energy production over two consecutive days. He noted that similar supply issues have been reported in several states, indicating that this problem extends beyond Tamil Nadu. The minister confirmed that necessary electricity was sourced from the Common Power Supply Pool on Friday evening, normalizing the situation across the state.
In a statement released on Saturday, TNPDCL explained that the prolonged heat wave this year has led to an unexpected surge in electricity consumption. The increased use of air conditioners, fans, and other cooling devices in homes, commercial spaces, and offices has contributed to the rising demand. Moreover, low wind speeds have affected the output from wind energy plants, which are crucial for the state’s power supply. Technical issues, such as voltage fluctuations in certain distribution network segments, have also arisen due to the reduced availability of wind power.
To effectively manage the growing disparity between supply and demand, TNPDCL is securing additional electricity from various sources. The corporation is closely monitoring the electricity network and demand patterns to prevent further disruptions. Officials have assured the public that they will regularly review power availability and procure more electricity as needed. TNPDCL is committed to maintaining a stable electricity supply despite adverse weather conditions and reduced wind energy production, taking all necessary steps to minimize inconvenience for consumers.
