Gandhi Nagar, New Delhi, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : A four-story building in Gandhi Nagar, East Delhi, has tilted unexpectedly, alarming local residents. The structure’s precarious condition has raised safety concerns, prompting authorities to evacuate the building as a precaution.
To ensure public safety, the area surrounding the building has been cordoned off to prevent anyone from approaching. A team from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) arrived on-site to evaluate the situation and initiate necessary actions. Currently, the building remains unoccupied while officials monitor the situation closely.
Former mayor Shyam Sundar Agarwal visited the site after receiving reports about the incident. He observed cracks forming between two adjacent buildings and noted that one of the structures had also tilted slightly. Teams from the municipal corporation, police, and fire department responded promptly. Officials determined that the building was at risk of collapse, leading to the evacuation.
Agarwal stated that the building was cleared in a timely manner and that its owner has been issued a notice. He cautioned that the building could collapse at any moment, posing a significant risk.
Addressing the issue of illegal constructions and dilapidated buildings in Delhi, Agarwal remarked that this action, although delayed, is a necessary step. He emphasized the need for strict enforcement against illegal buildings and those deemed hazardous.
He raised concerns about the rapid construction of five- and six-story buildings, questioning the oversight of municipal officials during their development. He asserted that these structures likely arose from collusion among officials, underscoring the urgency for action against such buildings.
This incident follows a tragic event on September 6, when a building collapse in the Satya Niketan area resulted in the deaths of at least seven people. That building was being used as a paying guest accommodation for men.
