Houston, June 15: Four-time world champion Germany kicked off the FIFA World Cup 2026 in spectacular fashion. In their opening match of Group E, Germany delivered an impressive performance, defeating Curacao 7-1.
The match began brilliantly for Germany. Within just six minutes, Felix Nmecha showcased excellent synergy with Florian Wirtz, scoring the fastest goal of the tournament so far. After taking an early lead, Germany continued to press forward relentlessly.
However, Curacao, the smallest nation by both size and population to qualify for the World Cup, stunned everyone by scoring in the first half. The Caribbean nation, with a population of approximately 155,000 and an area of only 171 square miles, provided a memorable moment for its fans when midfielder Livano Comenencia scored a remarkable goal. His shot deflected past Germany’s experienced goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and found the net.
Curacao even had a chance to take the lead but failed to capitalize. Following this, Germany regained control of the game. Nico Schlotterbeck scored with a brilliant header from a corner kick, putting Germany ahead 2-1. Just before halftime, Germany was awarded a penalty when Richarlyson Bazoer fouled Nmecha in the area. Kai Havertz converted the penalty flawlessly, extending Germany’s lead to 3-1 by the end of the first half.
As the second half began, Germany completely dominated the match. Just 69 seconds into the half, Jamal Musiala scored a stunning goal, making the score 4-1. Curacao’s hopes of a comeback were nearly extinguished as Germany continued their relentless attack.
Nathaniel Brown scored on his World Cup debut, increasing Germany’s lead to 5-1. Shortly after, Deniz Undav added another goal, bringing the score to 6-1. Undav not only scored but also played a crucial role in the seventh goal, assisting Kai Havertz, who netted his second goal and sealed Germany’s commanding 7-1 victory.
