September 23 (Udaipur Kiran News): FuriLabs has announced the launch of its latest Linux-powered smartphone, the FLX1s, priced at $550. The device runs on the company’s Debian-based FuriOS but also allows users to install alternative operating systems, run Android apps, and even handle virtualization through KVM.

Specifications and Features

The FLX1s comes with a 6.7-inch display offering a 1600 x 720 resolution and 90Hz refresh rate, a step down from the original FLX1’s higher-resolution 120Hz panel. It features a 20MP main camera, a 2MP macro lens, and a 13MP selfie camera. The phone has a polycarbonate frame with a glass back and weighs 201 grams.

The handset is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 900 processor, coupled with 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, expandable up to 1TB via microSD. A 5,000mAh battery with wired USB-C 2.0 charging keeps it running. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, dual SIM, and 5G.

Privacy-First Approach

A standout feature of the FLX1s is its hardware-level privacy switches along the mid-frame. These switches physically cut power to the microphone, cameras, and baseband chip, offering enhanced protection for privacy-focused users.

Design and Trade-offs

Compared to the earlier FLX1, the FLX1s trims down size and weight but also scales back in some areas:

  • Lower-resolution screen

  • Smaller camera sensor

  • No wireless charging

  • Splash resistance instead of IP68 rating

  • Removal of the headphone jack

Target Audience

With its open-source flexibility and privacy-first design, the FLX1s is aimed at a niche market of users who prioritise software freedom and security over mainstream Android or iOS features.

The FLX1s is available in select markets now, though wider availability details remain limited.
