Washington, April 29: The United States is intensifying its military focus on China, viewing it as a long-term strategic challenge. Senior commanders have warned that maintaining an edge in cyber capabilities and special operations forces is crucial in an increasingly competitive global environment.
During a Senate hearing regarding the U.S. Special Operations Command and Cyber Command, Admiral Frank Bradley stated that American forces must address multiple threats, with a primary focus on Beijing.
Bradley informed lawmakers, “We must prepare our military for the long-term challenges posed by China.” He also highlighted the security landscape shaped by threats from Russia, Iran, and transnational networks.
He noted that U.S. forces can no longer concentrate on a single mission. He referred to a strategic environment that officials describe as simultaneity, meaning managing conflicts and confrontations across various domains and regions.
Leaders from Cyber Command emphasized that technological competition, particularly in artificial intelligence, is essential to countering China’s military advantage. General Joshua Rudd stated that maintaining advancements in technology is vital for preserving U.S. advantages.
He remarked, “It is crucial for the U.S. to have a technological edge in every aspect of warfare. As AI becomes more integrated into military operations, we must sustain our advantages.”
Lawmakers warned that China is actively leveraging new technologies. During the hearing, officials agreed that Beijing is utilizing artificial intelligence in military applications, underscoring the need for a technological race.
The Pentagon is responding with a significant overhaul dubbed “Cybercom 2.0,” aimed at strengthening the cyber workforce and accelerating innovation. Katherine Sutton, Assistant Secretary of Defense for Cyber Policy, noted that adversaries are rapidly advancing to exploit vulnerabilities.
Sutton stated, “Our adversaries have moved beyond espionage and theft; they are preparing for conflict by developing disruptive capabilities within our critical infrastructure.”
