Visakhapatnam, April 28: Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu and Union Electronics and IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw laid the foundation for the Google Cloud India AI Hub on Tuesday.
Google plans to invest approximately $15 billion in this AI hub, marking the largest foreign direct investment (FDI) in the country’s history.
During the ground-breaking ceremony, Naidu urged Google and its partners, AdaniConnect and Airtel Xtra, to complete and inaugurate the project by September 2028. He assured that the state government would provide all possible support for the swift completion of the project.
Naidu emphasized that Google’s investment is a game changer, not just for Visakhapatnam but for the entire state. He recalled that 30 years ago, when he laid the foundation for Cyberabad as an IT city, it has now become a hub for wealth creation.
He stated that this will be the largest data center in Asia, positioning Andhra Pradesh as the AI data gateway for the country.
Naidu remarked, “Google, which started as a search engine, is now becoming the engine of India’s development. While everyone searches on Google, in this instance, Google searched and chose Andhra Pradesh.”
He highlighted that Visakhapatnam has all the necessary attributes and is the most suitable location for this mega project. He assured that there would be no water shortage and promised to bring water from the Godavari River to the city within 60 days.
The Chief Minister stated that the government is committed to using the Google AI data center to enhance its “governance speed.”
In his address, Minister Vaishnaw noted that India has missed several technological development cycles as a nation. He mentioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for India to play a leading role in the new technological development process.
He pointed out that due to initiatives taken in the 1990s and early 2000s, India became a leader in IT services but lagged in manufacturing semiconductors, servers, laptops, and mobile phones. However, with the launch of the Make in India initiative, the situation has dramatically changed over the past decade.
Vaishnaw stated that mobile phones have become the country’s most exported product, surpassing gems and jewelry, textiles, and diesel, which were previously leading exports.
He reiterated the Prime Minister’s vision of making India a major global center for electronic manufacturing. He added, “In today’s world filled with geopolitical uncertainties, the world seeks a reliable partner where IT rights are protected, and security concerns are addressed. This is only possible in India.”
