Fuel Supply Disruptions Hit Bangladesh Amid Rising Consumer Demand

Fuel Supply Disruptions Hit Bangladesh Amid Rising Consumer Demand

Dhaka, March 24: Bangladesh’s Minister of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources, Iqbal Hasan Mahmood, has acknowledged that the country’s fuel supply system is facing disruptions due to a surge in consumer demand.

During a press conference at the secretariat in Dhaka on Tuesday, Mahmood explained that fuel is depleting at a faster rate at the pumps than usual.

According to the United News of Bangladesh (UNB), he stated, “Previously, tankers would be filled in the morning, and by the end of the day, some fuel would still remain. Now, due to long queues, fuel runs out quickly.”

When asked why consumers are struggling to find fuel despite earlier assurances of no shortages, Mahmood clarified that delays in supply during the early morning hours are causing the issue.

He noted, “It takes time to fill tankers from the depot and deliver fuel to the pumps. Therefore, there is a shortage felt in the morning, but fuel becomes available later.”

Mahmood emphasized that the sudden spike in consumer demand has led to fuel that would typically last all day running out in just a few hours.

He further explained, “When demand increases so suddenly, it is natural for fuel to deplete quickly.”

The minister pointed out that the large crowds at the pumps are putting pressure on the existing supply system. When questioned about the possibility of the government implementing fuel rationing, he stated, “I cannot comment on that right now.” He urged people not to purchase fuel in excess, as this could further disrupt supply.

Reports from Bangladesh’s leading daily, The Daily Star, indicate that several petrol stations in Khulna are experiencing fuel shortages, causing inconvenience for travelers. Local resident Palash Das from the Boyra area mentioned that he was unable to find fuel for his motorcycle after visiting four different stations.
