FSSAI Issues Strict Guidelines Against Metal Fasteners in Food Packaging

New Delhi, June 12: The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a directive to food business operators (FBOs) to immediately cease the use of metal pins, staple pins, wires, and similar materials for packaging food products. This decision comes in response to safety concerns for consumers.

The regulatory body highlighted that metal fasteners have been found in various food items, including decorative cakes, snack packets, cake boxes, sweet boxes, and takeaway food parcels.

FSSAI reported multiple incidents where metal pieces or staple pins were discovered in cakes and food packets. Such occurrences pose a significant risk to food safety, as consumers may inadvertently ingest these metal objects, leading to potential injuries or health issues.

All food business operators are now required to stop using metal pins, wires, or any similar materials for sealing, securing, or packaging any food items, bakery products, takeaway meals, snack packets, or food parcels.

Furthermore, FSSAI has warned that any operator failing to comply with this directive will face appropriate actions. According to the advisory, non-compliance may result in punitive measures under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and its associated regulations.

This initiative aims to enhance food safety standards and eliminate unnecessary risks to consumers associated with the use of metal fastening materials in food packaging and handling.
