Essential Guidelines for Worshipping Shiva on the First Monday of Sawan

New Delhi, August 2: The first Monday of Sawan is considered particularly significant for worshipping Lord Shiva. It is believed that sincere devotion and offering water on this day can alleviate life’s troubles and fulfill wishes. However, there are certain mistakes to avoid during the worship, according to religious beliefs.

Firstly, never offer turmeric, vermilion, or kumkum to Lord Shiva. These items are primarily used in the worship of goddesses. Instead, it is auspicious to offer water, milk, yogurt, honey, Ganga water, and bilva leaves to the Shiva Lingam.

When offering bilva leaves, caution is essential. The leaves should be clean, unbroken, and consist of three leaflets. Avoid offering leaves that are infested, dry, or torn. It is customary to place the smooth side of the bilva leaves facing the Shiva Lingam.

Additionally, tulsi leaves should not be offered on the Shiva Lingam. According to tradition, the use of tulsi in Shiva worship is prohibited. Similarly, the ketaki (pandanus) flower is also not offered to Lord Shiva.

During the water offering, do not rush. It is considered auspicious to chant the mantra “Om Namah Shivaya” slowly and with a calm mind while pouring water. Worship should be performed with genuine faith and devotion, not merely for show.

If you are performing an abhishekam with milk, ensure that you follow it with clean water. This is believed to purify the Shiva Lingam. Avoid spilling the water or milk used for the abhishekam, and always keep the worship area clean.

Sawan Monday fasting emphasizes purity. Therefore, one should refrain from anger, lies, abusive language, and disrespecting others on this day. It is believed that Lord Shiva is pleased not only through worship but also through good behavior and self-control.

If the temple is crowded, avoid pushing or disrupting others’ worship. Wait patiently for your turn to have a peaceful darshan and adhere to the rules. If visiting the temple for water offering is not feasible, you can still meditate on Lord Shiva, chant mantras, and recite the Shiva Chalisa at home.
