New Delhi, August 2: The month of Sawan is considered the most sacred for the worship of Lord Shiva. This year, the first Monday of Sawan falls on August 3. In anticipation, special preparations have been made at the renowned Kalka Ji Temple in Delhi. The temple administration expects a large number of devotees to arrive for the water offering and Rudra Abhishekam to Lord Shiva.
In an interview, Surendranath Avadhut, the head priest of Kalka Ji Temple, stated that a special puja will be conducted for Lord Shiva on this auspicious day. The rituals will begin with the worship of Lord Ganesha, Mother Ambika, Lord Kartikeya, and Nandi Maharaj. Following this, devotees will chant Vedic mantras while performing the water offering and Rudra Abhishekam for Lord Shiva.
Surendranath Avadhut explained that the month of Sawan is particularly dear to Lord Shiva. According to ancient beliefs, during the churning of the ocean, Lord Shiva consumed the poison to protect the world, which raised his body temperature. To cool him down, all the deities performed a water offering on him. This tradition of pouring water on the Shiva Lingam during Sawan has continued ever since.
He also mentioned that, according to religious beliefs, Mother Parvati performed rigorous penance and worship during the month of Sawan to win Lord Shiva as her husband. For this reason, Sawan is considered highly auspicious for the worship of Shiva and Parvati. During this time, married women observe fasts for eternal marital bliss, while unmarried girls pray to Lord Shiva for a desirable life partner.
Surendranath Avadhut added that Sawan is not only a month of Shiva devotion but also hosts several significant festivals. Celebrations such as Hariyali Teej, Mangala Gauri Vrat, and Raksha Bandhan occur during this month. Additionally, devotees from across the country bring holy water from sacred rivers to perform water offerings at their local Shiva temples. It is believed that sincere offerings made with faith fulfill all the wishes of the devotees.
