Peshawar, August 2: A powerful bomb explosion shook Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, on Sunday. The blast, attributed to an improvised explosive device (IED), occurred in the provincial capital of Peshawar. Local media reported that two police officers sustained injuries in the incident.
According to the prominent English daily Dawn, the explosion took place near the Peshawar-Islamabad motorway toll plaza. The IED detonated close to the eastern entrance of the provincial capital, near the Pir Zakori Bridge, injuring two police personnel.
Police confirmed that the injured included the driver of a police van and a constable, with damage reported to the vehicle as well. Alam Khan, a spokesperson for the city police, stated, “Both police officers have been taken to the hospital for treatment.”
Shortly after the incident was reported, a bomb disposal squad arrived at the scene.
This explosion follows a recent terrorist attack on a checkpoint in Hangu district, which resulted in the deaths of nine police officers, including a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), and left 28 others injured.
On July 29, during a joint security operation in the Swat districts of Kabal and Matta, a police officer and four members of a village defense committee were killed.
According to the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS), July witnessed the highest number of security personnel fatalities since January 2023, with 112 killed in terrorist attacks. This marks the second-highest monthly death toll in over a decade.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, 154 deaths were recorded in July, a significant increase from 75 in June, representing a 105% rise. The number of injured individuals rose from 60 to 98, with the fatalities among security personnel increasing from 12 to 38.
