Kabul, August 2: Afghan security forces have successfully thwarted an arms smuggling attempt in the eastern Nangarhar province, recovering 24 assault rifles of various types. The provincial government announced this in a statement on Sunday.
According to the statement, these weapons were being secretly brought in from a neighboring country. The recovery took place at the Torkham border crossing.
The Xinhua News Agency reported that the arms were hidden inside a vehicle. Authorities did not provide any information regarding whether anyone was detained in connection with this incident.
This operation is part of a larger campaign by the Afghan government aimed at curbing the presence of any ammunition among the general public and preventing arms smuggling through border areas.
This is not the first instance of such a recovery at the Afghan border. On July 29, police detained two individuals in Afghanistan’s eastern Logar province for illegal possession of weapons, seizing a significant cache of arms and ammunition.
Provincial police spokesperson Mohammad Yunus Yusufzai provided detailed information about the arrests. He stated that the two suspects were apprehended in the Dawlat Shah district, where authorities found five Kalashnikov assault rifles, three hand grenades, and hundreds of bullets and projectiles.
He emphasized that the police do not allow anyone to take the law into their own hands or possess or transport weapons without permission, as this disrupts law and order.
Similar recoveries occurred in June when Afghan security forces seized a cache of arms and ammunition in the eastern Paktia province. The provincial police office reported that these weapons were discovered during a security operation in the border district of Dand Patan, near Pakistan.
The statement indicated that the haul included eight Kalashnikov rifles, 12 pistols, 20 Kalashnikov barrels, three M4 rifle barrels, and a thousand rounds of pistol ammunition.
Officials noted that these weapons and ammunition were being trafficked into Afghanistan when security forces intercepted and seized the shipment.
In recent months, Afghan security forces have intensified their campaigns against arms smuggling and other cross-border crimes as part of efforts to strengthen security and maintain law and order across the country.
