Moscow, August 2: A bomb explosion at the Balzhi Rossi restaurant in Moscow on Saturday evening has resulted in the deaths of three individuals and left 21 others injured. The incident has been confirmed by Russia’s National Anti-Terrorism Committee. Moscow police stated in an earlier report to the RIA Novosti news agency that investigators and forensic specialists were present at the scene.
According to the committee, as reported by the TASS state news agency, “An improvised explosive device detonated at a restaurant on Kudrinskaya Square in Moscow, resulting in three fatalities.” Among the deceased was a woman who was carrying the device into the restaurant, a security agent who attempted to stop her, and a customer.
A Telegram channel linked to Russian security forces initially suggested that the explosion might have been related to a gas leak, speculating that it could have originated from the restaurant’s kitchen.
Reports indicate that the restaurant was booked for a private birthday party, attended by Russian Air Force Commander Alexandre Chayko. Images shared on Russian Telegram channels showed fire engines and ambulances outside the building. The RIA Novosti agency reported that a woman tried to smuggle the bomb into the establishment, but was denied entry by a security guard just before the explosion occurred.
Authorities have not disclosed who they believe was the intended target, but residents of Moscow suspect a connection to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The restaurant is located in one of Moscow’s iconic Stalin-era high-rise buildings, and the streets surrounding the square were temporarily closed off. Dozens of cyclists had gathered nearby for an evening ride, which was subsequently canceled. Video footage released by Russian news agencies showed heavily armed police officers at the scene.
In recent times, Russia has witnessed several terrorist attacks. Since the onset of the war in 2022, the secret service has claimed or accused Ukraine of multiple attacks targeting Russian military officials and supporters of the conflict.
Russia blamed Ukraine for the assassination of senior general Yaroslav Moskalyk in a car bomb attack in April 2025.
