New Delhi, August 2: A recent report indicates that India’s funded housing initiative is emerging as a key pillar in improving the living conditions of marginalized families in Sri Lanka while strengthening bilateral relations.
According to a report by Ceylon News 24, the latest phase of the Indian housing project marks another milestone in the development partnership between India and Sri Lanka. It demonstrates New Delhi’s ongoing support as Sri Lanka rebuilds its economic and social infrastructure following recent financial challenges.
The report states that under the fourth phase of the Indian Housing Project (IHP), the foundation for 57 homes was recently laid in the Kanawela Estate of the Badulla district, funded by the Indian government’s grant assistance. The ceremony was attended by Sri Lanka’s Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure, K.V. Samantha Vidyaratne, and India’s Consul General in Hambantota, Harvinder Singh.
The fourth phase aims to construct 10,000 homes across six provinces, with a particular focus on underprivileged families living in Sri Lanka’s plantation regions.
The report highlights that the larger Indian Housing Project plans to build approximately 60,000 homes throughout Sri Lanka, with an investment exceeding 18 billion rupees. In the first two phases, 46,000 homes were built or repaired in the war-affected northern and eastern provinces, while the third phase provided 4,000 homes for workers in the plantation sector.
Describing the initiative as more than just a common infrastructure program, the report emphasizes that this project goes beyond laying bricks and mortar; it fosters long-term stability and restores dignity to thousands of vulnerable families.
The significance of the project for the Indian Origin Tamil (IOT) community in Sri Lanka’s plantation sector is also underscored in the report. This community has played a crucial role in the country’s economy for over two centuries, despite facing socio-economic challenges.
During his visit to Sri Lanka in July 2023, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced a multi-sectoral grant package of 750 million rupees to assist in the development of plantation areas, marking 200 years of the Indian Tamil community’s presence in Sri Lanka.
The report suggests that access to safe and quality housing is expected to play a vital role in restoring livelihoods, strengthening communities, and aiding Sri Lanka’s extensive economic recovery following its worst financial crisis in recent history.
Furthermore, the report notes that the participation of senior representatives from both countries in the foundation-laying ceremony reflects a shared commitment to translating mutual cooperation into tangible benefits for ordinary citizens.
This housing program aligns with India’s ‘Neighborhood First’ policy and serves as a remarkable testament to bilateral solidarity. It showcases India’s ongoing role as a development partner for Sri Lanka through grant-based infrastructure and welfare projects.
