New Delhi, May 2: BJP MP Damodar Agrawal has expressed strong support for the Election Commission’s authority to conduct re-polling in South 24 Parganas, West Bengal. He stated, “Wherever there are suspicions of irregularities or factual complaints, it is the Election Commission’s right to initiate re-polling. The tradition of starting vote counting 4-5 days after polling is also quite old.”
Agrawal also targeted the opposition regarding the Supreme Court’s hearing on the Trinamool Congress’s petition, which challenges the Calcutta High Court’s decision. This case pertains to the appointment of central government and public sector employees for vote counting in the West Bengal Assembly elections.
He remarked, “For the past 77 years, observers have been appointed by the central government. Distrust in the country’s system reflects their internal weakness. When they lose, they have to blame someone. Sometimes they go to the strong room, and other times they file petitions in court. They have not received any relief from any court so far. Mamata Banerjee’s stance is undemocratic.”
On the Supreme Court granting anticipatory bail to Congress leader Pawan Khera, Agrawal responded, “Pawan Khera has made irresponsible statements against the law and has spoken without basis. He will now have to go through the judicial process.”
He also expressed sorrow over the cruise accident in Madhya Pradesh, stating, “The recovered bodies were wearing life jackets. The government is sensitive, and the administration promptly initiated relief and rescue operations.”
