Delhis Lieutenant Governor Implements Strict Measures Against Illegal Construction

New Delhi, June 3: The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu, participated in a high-level review meeting with the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to formulate a comprehensive action plan aimed at strengthening urban governance, enhancing civic infrastructure, and improving structural safety in the capital. During the meeting, the Lieutenant Governor issued several directives to officials.

In a post on X, Sandhu emphasized the need for strict enforcement of building regulations to curb illegal structural expansions. He instructed the MCD to implement a time-bound strategy for decisive action against unauthorized constructions. Key civic priorities were also reviewed, including the cleaning and dredging of rainwater drainage systems before the monsoon, repairing roads and sidewalks to reduce dust, and accelerating waste disposal processes to strengthen sanitation standards.

The Lieutenant Governor stated that the meeting also focused on reviewing welfare initiatives. Special attention was given to the swift implementation of the PM-Uday scheme for residents of unauthorized colonies and finalizing a participatory CSR framework for the revitalization of public parks.

Tarunjeet Singh Sandhu remarked, “Inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of inclusive development, we are committed to providing every resident of Delhi with a safe, planned, clean, and dignified living environment.”

Earlier, on Tuesday, in a significant step towards environmental protection, Sandhu approved the reorganization of the Delhi Ridge Management Board (DRMB). This decision was made in accordance with directives from the Supreme Court in the T.N. Godavarman Thirumulpad vs. Union of India case and provisions of the Environment Protection Act, 1986.

The restructured Delhi Ridge Management Board will be chaired by the Chief Secretary of the Delhi government, with the Vice Chairman of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) as a member. Senior officials from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs will also be part of the board. Additionally, the Commissioner of the MCD, the Chairperson of the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC), the Director General of the Central Public Works Department (CPWD), senior officials from the Delhi Police, the Principal Secretary of the Revenue Department, and the Principal Secretary of the Environment and Forest Department will also be included.

To monitor ground-level activities, the Chief Conservator of Forests of the Delhi government has been appointed as the Member Secretary. Furthermore, Chandraprakash Goyal has been included as an expert member to represent the Central Empowered Committee (CEC).
