New Delhi, June 3: A cycling rally was held in Hauz Khas, New Delhi, on Wednesday to celebrate World Bicycle Day. The event aimed to promote cycling as a sustainable, healthy, and environmentally friendly mode of transportation, raising awareness for clean mobility and a greener future.
Bhairavi Joshi, CEO of BYCS India Foundation, stated that over 55 cities are connected through the “Bicycle Mayors” initiative, working to promote cycling. She emphasized that the primary goal is to raise public awareness about the benefits of cycling and encourage its increased use.
Joshi urged people to view cycling not just as a sport but as a lifestyle choice. She advocated for the use of bicycles for daily tasks.
Dr. Jagdish Rajesh, Deputy Director General of the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), remarked that this initiative is commendable, bringing everyone together for a common cause. He noted that cycling is beneficial not only for personal health but also contributes to the nation when practiced regularly.
Dilip Sabharwal, a Bicycle Mayor, shared, “Today is World Bicycle Day, celebrated globally, and we are observing it here in New Delhi.” He expressed the goal of promoting “Cycle to Work,” emphasizing that bicycles were originally invented as a means of transportation.
Sabharwal added, “Cycling addresses numerous issues such as pollution, traffic congestion, health problems, and the oil crisis. It allows individuals to stay fit while conserving fuel and improving air quality. This is why we organized the cycling rally in New Delhi on Wednesday.”
