Indias First Hydrogen Train Achieves Remarkable Success on Jind-Sonepat Route

Jind, July 23: India’s first hydrogen fuel cell passenger train has set a new benchmark for public transport. The hydrogen-powered train has achieved historic success on the Jind-Sonepat route.

Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on July 17, 2026, this innovative train has covered an impressive distance of nearly 900 kilometers in its first five days of commercial operation. This milestone firmly positions India among the select countries operating advanced hydrogen rail technology.

By replacing traditional diesel engines with two advanced 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen-electric propulsion systems, the new train significantly reduces diesel and conventional electricity consumption. The fuel cells on board generate electricity by combining hydrogen and oxygen, resulting in the emission of only water vapor and heat. This zero-emission system offers a green and sustainable travel option for daily commuters.

Moreover, the use of this cutting-edge technology has not imposed any additional financial burden on passengers. Ticket prices remain very affordable, comparable to standard DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) services, ranging from 10 to 25 rupees, ensuring sustainable travel is accessible to the common man.

This 10-coach hydrogen train presents a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to fuel-dependent trains. By completely eliminating polluting emissions and reducing reliance on expensive fuel imports, it actively supports India’s ‘National Green Hydrogen Mission.’

With the support of a specialized, indigenous hydrogen storage and refueling facility in Jind, the long-term operational framework ensures maximum economic benefits for Indian Railways.

The historic success of the Jind-Sonepat hydrogen train serves as a reliable blueprint for developing clean, green, and self-reliant transport infrastructure across the nation.
