New Delhi, July 24: The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has launched a special inspection campaign in Faridabad and Gurugram to combat air pollution and control dust emissions from roads. This initiative, named ‘Operation Clean Air,’ was conducted on July 22.
The CAQM stated that the purpose of this inspection was to assess the status of work being carried out according to the urban road redevelopment and paving standard framework issued by the commission.
A team of nine flying squads was deployed to inspect roads under the jurisdiction of the Faridabad Municipal Corporation and the Gurugram Municipal Corporation.
During the campaign, a total of 64 road segments, spanning approximately 31 kilometers, were inspected. This included 50 roads in Faridabad and 14 in Gurugram, covering roads both under 10 meters and between 10-15 meters in width.
According to the CAQM, complete end-to-end paving was found on 49 road segments, which included 38 roads in Faridabad and 11 in Gurugram.
However, 15 road segments were still incomplete, with 12 in Faridabad and 3 in Gurugram. The commission noted that work remains to be finished in these areas.
The CAQM reported that while the Faridabad and Gurugram municipal corporations claimed that road development was in accordance with the standard framework, violations of regulations were observed during the inspection. The commission has directed the relevant agencies to identify officials and staff who provided false information and take appropriate disciplinary action against them.
The CAQM emphasized that proper end-to-end paving of urban roads is crucial to prevent road dust from re-entering the air. This will reduce dust stirred up by vehicle movement and enhance the effectiveness of pollution control measures like mechanical road sweeping.
The commission has instructed all road construction agencies to expedite the remaining development work and ensure compliance with the established standards. The CAQM stated that implementing the standard framework by all agencies is essential for long-term control of road dust pollution in the Delhi-NCR region.
Furthermore, the commission clarified that the inspection campaign under ‘Operation Clean Air’ will continue across the NCR to monitor the implementation of air pollution control measures at the grassroots level and to take timely corrective actions as needed.
