New Delhi, August 6: A 42-year-old Kanwar camp has been set up in Seelampur, Delhi, to serve devotees during the month of Sawan. This camp, organized by the Kanwar Seva Committee, is located at the Dharmapura Red Light.
According to Tirth Ram, a member of the Kanwar Seva Committee, this is the Lala Murli Dhar Kanwar Camp, recognized as the first Kanwar camp in Delhi. It was initiated by Lala Murli Dhar himself, and since then, thousands of Kanwar pilgrims have been served here every year.
To ensure safety, Delhi Police personnel are stationed at the camp. Tirth Ram mentioned that CRPF soldiers are also present, and the local SHO regularly assesses the situation.
The health of the Kanwar pilgrims is a top priority. A team of doctors is available at the camp, along with first aid and medication. To prevent any issues with food and drink, arrangements for 24-hour meals, tea, snacks, and cleanliness have been made. Tirth Ram emphasized that since the pilgrims walk throughout the night, every effort is made to ensure their comfort and service.
A devotee who began his journey from Haridwar on July 31 remarked, “I have seen many Kanwar camps along the way, but I haven’t found medical facilities and care like this anywhere else.”
Another Kanwar pilgrim stated, “I faced no difficulties during the journey. All essential services are available.”
The Kanwar Yatra for 2026 commenced on July 30. According to the Hindu calendar, it begins on the first day of the sacred month of Sawan and peaks on Sawan Shivratri. This year, Sawan Shivratri falls on August 11, when devotees will perform water offerings on the Shivling with Ganga water.
Millions of devotees walk barefoot from places like Haridwar, Gaumukh, or Sultan Ganj, carrying Ganga water in bamboo Kanwars to their local Shiva temples. The journey will conclude on August 28, marking the end of the Sawan month.
