Washington, August 21: President Donald Trump has initiated a campaign to conduct over a thousand space launches and re-entries annually by 2030. This initiative aims to boost the United States’ commercial space economy and counter challenges from rival nations in space.
Trump signed a National Security Presidential Memorandum, which the White House states replaces outdated space transportation policies with an “America First” approach. This new policy focuses on ensuring reliable, affordable, and modern access to space.
The objective of the new policy is to make the U.S. space transportation industry more competitive and robust. Under this initiative, government agencies and private companies will collaborate to develop launch infrastructure and work on reducing the costs of launching new space systems.
Federal agencies have been directed to work with the private sector to develop infrastructure related to space transportation. Additionally, the processes for issuing permits and conducting environmental reviews will be expedited.
The Secretaries of Transportation and Interior, the Secretary of Defense, and the NASA Administrator will identify locations for developing new space transportation infrastructure, which may include new launch and re-entry centers.
The memorandum states that special airspace should be designated for critical launch routes. Space transportation activities will also be integrated into a comprehensive plan to modernize the U.S. air traffic control system.
The White House’s science and technology advisors will collaborate with various government agencies to formulate a unified strategy for the space transportation industry. This strategy will address procurement processes, space security policies, and workforce issues essential for the industry.
The Secretaries of State and Commerce have been instructed to work on increasing access for U.S. space transportation companies in foreign markets and to encourage other countries to adopt U.S. technologies and standards.
NASA has been directed to promote commercial transportation services for missions to the Moon. It will also assist private companies with robotic missions to Mars and explore private options for transporting humans to and from Mars.
According to the memorandum, the Secretary of Defense has been tasked with enhancing and expanding the use of transportation services in space for current and potential missions.
The White House emphasizes that this expansion is crucial as rival nations challenge the U.S. lead in space. The administration asserts that safeguarding critical space assets is essential for military readiness and the nation’s economic strength.
The government claims that expanding the commercial space sector could create high-paying aerospace manufacturing jobs and reduce the costs associated with developing and deploying space systems.
Setting a goal of over a thousand launches and re-entries each year signifies a substantial increase in U.S. space activities. The administration states that achieving this target will require new infrastructure, faster regulatory decisions, increased launch capacity, and deeper collaboration between the government and private companies.
During his first term, Trump established the U.S. Space Force, the first new branch of the U.S. armed forces in over 70 years since the Air Force was formed. He also issued seven space policy directives related to the Artemis lunar mission, commercial regulations, and space cybersecurity principles.
