Japans Defense Minister Meets PM Modi to Strengthen Defense Cooperation

New Delhi, August 21: Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his official visit to India. The two leaders discussed various aspects of enhancing India-Japan defense cooperation and their bilateral strategic partnership.

Prime Minister Modi recalled the extensive discussions held with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi during the 16th India-Japan Annual Summit in July 2026. He praised the ongoing progress in India-Japan defense collaboration.

The Prime Minister shared his vision for further strengthening the special strategic and global partnership between India and Japan. He emphasized that defense and security cooperation between the two nations plays a crucial role in promoting peace, stability, and prosperity across the Indo-Pacific region.

PM Modi also highlighted opportunities for partnership in India’s defense sector for Japan. He mentioned that under the ‘Make in India’ initiative, Japanese companies could collaborate with Indian firms and startups for co-development and co-production of defense equipment.

Meanwhile, Minister Koizumi informed the Prime Minister about the progress in bilateral defense cooperation and reiterated the Japanese government’s commitment to deepening relations with India. Both parties agreed on the necessity of elevating defense and security cooperation to new heights and strengthening a rules-based order in the Indo-Pacific region.

Earlier, India and Japan agreed to establish a working group, which will be co-chaired by senior officials from both countries at the joint secretary level. This group will facilitate collaboration in operational, intelligence, defense equipment, technology, and defense industry sectors.

Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and Japan’s Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi issued a joint statement regarding this initiative. It stated that the group will ensure overall coordination in the areas of cooperation agreed upon by both defense ministers, enhance synergy across various sectors, and expedite project implementation.
