New Delhi, April 7: Residents of unauthorized colonies in Delhi have received encouraging news. The central government led by Prime Minister Modi has made a significant decision that will benefit approximately 5 million people. Out of 1,731 unauthorized colonies in Delhi, 1,511 will be regularized based on the ‘as is, where is’ principle. This means families who have lived in their homes for years without legal rights will now gain legal ownership.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta expressed gratitude on behalf of the people of Delhi to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Urban Development, Manohar Lal. She wrote on the social media platform X, “Today marks a new chapter of relief, respect, and rights for 4.5 million people in Delhi. The Prime Minister has understood the long-ignored pain and felt the dreams of families who lived in their homes without rights. This sensitive thinking paved the way for the PM Uday scheme, clearing the path for the regularization of 1,511 out of 1,731 unauthorized colonies.”
She announced that the application process will commence on April 24. A timeline has been set: a survey will be conducted within seven days, a process to address application deficiencies will take 15 days, and transfer deeds will be issued within 45 days.
Rekha Gupta noted that both the central and Delhi governments have worked together to eliminate 22 major obstacles in this process, ensuring that millions of families can obtain their rights without delays. Additionally, small shops up to 20 square meters will also be regularized under certain conditions, providing relief to small traders.
She emphasized that in alignment with Prime Minister Modi’s visionary thinking, the future of Delhi is being strengthened. Under the Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) policy, planned, high-density, and mixed-use development will be promoted within a 500-meter radius around metro and RRTS corridors, covering approximately 207 square kilometers. This will pave the way for affordable housing, improved connectivity, and an easier life, especially benefiting low- and middle-income families.
In fact, the PM Uday scheme for illegal colonies was implemented in 2019, aiming to regularize buildings. At that time, only 40,000 houses were regularized, and the process was slow. Now, the procedure has been significantly simplified and expedited. The revenue department of the Delhi government will issue conveyance deeds, granting people immediate legal rights to their homes.
