New Delhi, August 28: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is worried about escalating tensions between the United States and Iran. This concern was voiced by his spokesperson.
In response to a question regarding new US sanctions on Iran, spokesperson Stephen Dujarric stated, “The Secretary-General is troubled by any new actions or statements that could worsen the situation. We are continuously witnessing disruptions in energy and food supplies.”
The inquiry was about whether Guterres received a letter from Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif, which mentioned the new US sanctions. Dujarric confirmed that the letter had been received and sent to the members of the UN Security Council and General Assembly as requested.
He noted that while the conflict may currently appear to be in a phase with less direct military confrontation, it is still causing significant damage to both the regional and global economy.
The spokesperson emphasized that the only path to a lasting solution is through dialogue. He acknowledged the mediation efforts by Qatar, Egypt, Pakistan, and other nations striving for a political resolution.
Meanwhile, a senior Iranian security official stated on Thursday that if the US takes any ‘malicious’ action, Iran will respond firmly by targeting US military and economic interests in the region. He warned that such a response would be ‘recorded in history.’
According to the semi-official Fars news agency, Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, made this statement during a meeting in Tehran with Qatar’s Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani.
Rezaei expressed distrust towards Washington, accusing the US of repeatedly betraying the diplomatic and negotiation process. He added that Iran will not reopen the Strait of Hormuz until the US takes concrete steps to meet Iran’s conditions.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Basset warned Iran on Monday of an ‘economic D-Day’ and announced a new series of sanctions against the country. In response, Iranian President Masoud Pajeshkian stated on Wednesday that the economic pressure from the US would not yield significant results against Iran.
